Eco Friendly Painting and Green Paints
Article by W Tsang
Now more than ever is the time when we all need to promote Green Living, one of the way is to get your home painters to use eco-friendly paints. Especially that we are now witnessing the changes in the natural environment and experiencing its serious impact on our lives. It is even scary to think of how we will manage to live in the next decade or so amidst the worsening of the earth.
We all need to do even the littlest contribution to save what is left of the environment and where else to start but in our own homes. As a matter of fact, there could be greater amount of pollutants inside the home compared to the pollutants outside, which should not be the case if only we properly choose the kind of products that we purchase and use.
There are various tasks associated with the house where green alternatives can be applied, among these is house painting. The traditional paint we have been using is known for its nauseating scent. Once we inhale this stink, it may cause us to be dizzy, feel weak and experience headaches. This unpleasant whiff have been caused by the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) contained by the paint. Do not be misguided by the word ‘organic’ in its name because in actuality this VOC is a chemical or carbon based compounds which supplies harmful effect to the environment when they evaporate into the atmosphere. Apparently, while the applied paint on the surface dries, the volatile organic compounds also start to evaporate, which causes the stinking and strong smell of the paint. This VOC evaporation not only goes for hours or days but could even last for months.
However, in relation to green living, there are now paints and other painting supplies that are manufactured which are eco-friendly and sustainable. Just be very careful in purchasing those painting products. There are those materials claiming that they are ecological yet the only green about them is the label and not the contents. Us and the environment will benefit greatly if we use these green paint and products.
The proper way to choose a green or eco-friendly paint is not just picking what is labeled as such. What is most important to check from about the paint are its content of natural color, VOC and biocides. Paints considered with low levels of VOCs are those which contain 250 grams or less per liter of such materials in latex variants, 380 grams per liter for paints that are oil-based. There even are better paints that have 100 grams of VOC contents in a liter of paint.
There is one type of paint that meets all the three requirements aforementioned, the milk paint. It is composed and made up of casein and lime. The acrylic paint and the recycled latex paint are good options too, though milk paint is still superior. In terms of low level content of biocide, latex paints are ideal.
The paints which must be avoided are those with solvent or oil bases as these are the types of paint having the utmost biocide and VOCs levels plus they are without natural pigmentation.
