Sans berets, smocks or palettes, the animals at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are getting their paws dirty with non-toxic, water-based paint and creating one-of-a-kind works of art. Painting is one among many activities that fall under Animal Enrichment—a program that provides physically and mentally stimulating activities and environments for the Zoo’s residents. The animals have the opportunity not only to choose how to behave, but also to use their natural abilities and behaviors in new and exciting ways.
Enrichment is an integral part of the daily care of the species in the Zoo’s collection. Keepers and curators carefully study animal behavior and determine what kinds of enrichment are appropriate for each species and, occasionally, individual animals. Keepers have a number of novel options for enrichment. They may alter an exhibit; train an animal; introduce new smells, sounds, foods, and objects; or enlist an animal in a research project, such as a study about foraging skills or cognitive research. Adding a variety of engaging activities helps keepers ensure the Zoo’s animals have a high quality of life.
Though the subjects of the animals’ paintings remain mysterious, the ways visitors can support the Zoo’s enrichment program are as clear as a starry, starry night. Drop off any size canvas, art paper, paint brush or non-toxic, water-based paint at the Visitor Center for the animal care staff to distribute. Animal keepers are collecting gifts for the animals this holiday season. Browse the list of needed items on the Enrichment Giving Tree section of the Zoo’s website or the Enrichment page of the Zoo’s online store.
Art produced by many of the Zoo’s mammal and bird residents will be available for purchase at the National Capital chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) Art Show, which will take place spring 2012.

I would like to paint the outside of my house using lavender as one of the colors but I need another color to compliment it

Really!? I hope your home is mid-centrury retro style. if a newer home 1950′s and up that may look tacky (no offense). If you have a Victorian style home or 1930′s row… you can pull it off stylishly with all of the trim that you can paint a different accent color.
I think lavender with a creme trim would work, or lavender with a gray trim. I think you need to do some researching of color combinations and test on the back of your house somewhere to see what you think. I may seem like a great idea in your mind but things don’t always appear how they seem. Go to any paint store and get paint booklets for examples of exterior paint options. Home Depot, Lowes is a start.
Bottom line…. how do you want to appear in your neighborhood? The impression you want to give?

a thousand steps

oil on birch panel. sold through the Caroline’s exhibition in Abingdon Virginia, 2004.
The year prior to this show, I opened the Space Between, my studio and gallery. I am a huge dave matthews fan. This painting came from a few lines of lyrics in one of his songs called ‘fool to think’ in which he says,
"you make a mess of me, i dance a thousand steps for you..but if you say yes to me, i’ll be whatever gets you through".
That kind of ‘love’ feels so amazingly good. your flaws melt, you feel like you could move the world if the other only wished it of you, and look beautiful doing it. In reality, the object of this desire isnt as near important as the feeling itself. But we arent talking about reality…just that amazing feeling.

Getting into my stride on these small studies now.
This one plays with the contrast of light quite nice and I’ve just distorted the features a bit to give it a slight stylized feel.
Keeping to mostly tonal pieces for the time being, but will get some colour on the go in good time.

oil painting – based on a doll I saw

Did a quick painting for fun. Water-mixable oil paint on canvas. These days I’m fond of adding a lot of green to flesh tones. Not that this doll face was flesh, but still… A lot of white speckles showing, which might seem like glare, but it’s mostly just canvas showing through.

Another wonderful painting – the energy and movement of the paint excited me.
